How Visitors Can Handle Criminal Charges in Brevard County

An alleged offender’s actual city or state of residence has no effect on criminal charges if he or she is arrested in Florida. People cannot just return home after vacation and think that the episodes will be forgotten.

A criminal case in the Melbourne area cannot be resolved in the courts of another state. Alleged offenders are usually unable to turn to the lawyers they have at home, as attorneys must be licensed in Florida to handle criminal cases here.

Following any arrest, an alleged offender is expected to appear in court to answer the charges. Failure to appear in these cases will result in the judge issuing a bench warrant that authorizes his or her arrest in any future encounter with law enforcement.

Penalties for many other kinds of arrests on the Space Coast are certain to follow alleged offenders back home wherever they live. In DUI cases, charges filed in Florida will be shared with other state offices through the Driver License Agreement (DLA) interstate compact, possibly leading to suspensions of driver’s licenses. Drug charges can result in the loss of federal student aid, scholarships, and educational grants.

The good news is that working with a local lawyer in Melbourne can usually mean the attorney can appear in Florida courts on behalf of alleged offenders and prevent several return trips. It can also result in criminal charges being dismissed or plea agreements involving possible probation.
